HOW TO FIND US

The Skye Bridge (no toll) means that getting here is easy and trouble free and also that Skye, and even the more remote but beautiful north west of the island, can be included in a tour of the Western Highlands.

If you are unfamiliar with driving in the Highlands please be aware that map distances can be misleading when estimating drive times. If you are at all uncertain about how long it will take you to get here just let us know where you are travelling from and we will be able to tell you how long it should take in normal traffic conditions. If you are having problems in planning your trip around the rest of Scotland then have a look at the Secret Scotland web site for detailed itineraries and accommodation guides for your holiday in Scotland.

Ardtreck Cottage is about 50 minutes drive from the Skye Bridge and is quite easy to find. Look out for our signs when you get to Portnalong. Click the link on the map below to see the cottage in relation to Portnalong and Fiskavaig.

Be careful if you rely on "SatNav" directions!

If the SatNav directs you via Mallaig, as the quickest route to the island, be aware that this route will involve a ferry crossing, from Mallaig to Armadale, and you should therefore check ferry times before you travel.

If you do plan to take the ferry we also advise that you make a ferry booking in advance for crossings in the months of May to September.

When planning your journey remember that you will need to check-in at the ferry terminal at least 30 minutes before the departure time and that the crossing takes about 30 minutes. The drive time from the Armadale ferry terminal to Ardtreck Cottage is then about 1 hour 20 minutes. see Caledonian MacBrayne ferry timetable

Directions

Turning at Sligachan

After crossing the bridge turn right at the first roundabout and follow the main road (A87) north, towards Portree, until you reach the junction with the A.863, signposted to Dunvegan, just before the Sligachan Hotel.

Turn left onto the A.863 and follow this road for about 5 miles (9 km) to the junction with the B.8009 at Drynoch, signposted to Carbost and Talisker Distillery.

Sign to Fiskavaig Turn left onto the B.8009 and keep right at all minor junctions along this road until you arrive at the village of Carbost.

Drive down the hill and through the village. Just past Talisker Distillery the road turns sharp left, up Talisker Brae, turning sharp right on the hairpin bend at the top. Continue on the road to Portnalong. At the T junction just before the Taigh Ailean hotel in Portnalong turn left towards Fiskavaig.

Turn right to the cottage Drive through Portnalong, ignoring the road sign-posted to "Ardtreck", and continue on the main road past the "Fiskavaig" sign. Soon after the Fiskavaig sign the road drops sharply down and over a small bridge, turning right up a short, steep, hill, with farm buildings on your right. At the top of the hill there is a sign to "Ardtreck Cottage" just before a red mail box. Turn right, opposite Bridge House, onto the sign-posted road which will lead you to the Cottage.

The road to Ardtreck cottage

Drive down the hill, looking directly towards the distinctive shapes of MacLeod’s Tables over Loch Bracadale and the islands of Oronsay and Wiay, past a few houses on the hillside to your right (and one on your left) and with Fiskavaig Bay on your left, continue to the end of the tarred public road and then onto the private gravel drive to Ardtreck Cottage, which you should now see straight in front of you.
